For more than half a century, The Texas Observer has been the source of information for people who want to know what's REALLY going on in Texas politics and culture. If people around the country had been reading the Observer during George W. Bush's tenure as governor of Texas, he never would have become resident-in-chief. Molly Ivins always referred to Texas as the "National Laboratory for Bad Government" and the Observer reveals how tru that is. Many of the policies GWB put into effect in Texas have since been ruining the USA under his secretive, self-serving administration.

I've been involved in progressive and Democratic politics in Texas since the '60s, and the Texas Observer has been an ally -- a guide, even -- every step of the way, not just "observing" but exposing the endless stream of follies that seem to dominate politics and government in The Great State. And not just in the State Capitol but all across Texas -- it was the Observer that exposed the Tulia travesty in which a rogue undercover cop fabricated stories that sent dozens of mostly black citizens of a small Texas town to prison on phony drug charges. Jim Hightower writes for the Observer, and the late, great Molly Ivins considered the Observer and the ACLU to be her two most important "causes."
