- Brilliant Book!
There has been a growing movement in the art world to return to painting in a style similar to the Old Masters. One obstacle to this is that the teaching methods traditionally passed down from teacher to student have been lost. This is largely due to the abandoning of techniques used by the old masters in favor of techniques of the "modern" art movement.
Therefore, a lot of artist longing to produce traditional works are frustrated at the lack of training and books on this subject.
I believe this book by Virgil Elliot is brilliant resource on the subject.
Mr. Elliott does a great job explaining the evolution of oil painting and the fundamental styles of painting that artist used. Furthermore, he does an equal job explaining how to paint with oils. Very well organized book, excelent images, topics are clearly exlained, it is an excelent compendium for a beginner, and also covers things of interest for more advanced painters

I purchased this book recently and it is excellent. Although I read the one star review beforehand which complained that it doesn't cover "painting the nude from life" it didn't do anything to disuade me. In fact, it helped to convince me TO buy it because I felt hopeful that this would be one of the rare books that went beyond the basics. I was not disappointed. As this is not a beginning drawing/painting book, the idea of drawing or painting the nude from life is something that at this level artists should know. (In fact, it IS briefly mentioned in the beginning of the book that one SHOULD paint the nude from life as much as possible. How much more needs to be said to an intermediate/advanced audience?) Personally, I am tired of art books that are geared towards experienced artists yet they do nothing more than repeat the same rudimentary information ad nauseum.
