- A very balanced book on the historical Jesus
Sanders has written a compelling and balanced view on the historical Jesus. His conclusion that Jesus was arrested for threats against the Temple (which he didn't make) and an explanation of the High Priest's behavior in light of the testimony being thrown out at Jesus' trial is compelling. It supports and makes sense of the gospel accounts. Sanders sees Jesus as someone who believes his actions will usher in the kindgom of God and perhaps died disappointed at the end. While I think Sanders misses the significance of the Son of Man reference in Daniel and what that meant to the Jewish community of the first century and fails to consider Jesus' view of himself as the suffering servant, I think this book is excellent, overall.

Scholarly assessments of early Christianity continue, unabated-- llustrating, if nothing else, the perennial allure of Jesus and His first century followers. One of the most highly-acclaimed contemporary scholars, E.P. Sanders, now a professor at Duke University, set forth his views in The Historical Figure of Jesus (New York: Penguin Press, c. 1993). "The aim of this book," he says, "is to lay out, as clearly as possible, what we can know, using the standard methods of historical research, and to distinguish this from inferences, labeling them clearly as such" (p. 5). Unlike some totally skeptical scholars, who insist we can know nothing about the Jesus of history, Sanders counters we can know a little bit.

- Consummate Historian's Take on Jesus
E.P. Sanders, a very professional and judicious scholar, provides here the best, short volume on a historical appraisal of Jesus. The book was published in 1993, though the research holds up remarkably well.

He doesn't start out with any prejudices; rather, he uses his formidable historical knowledge, skill, and writing to follow the evidence. He may very well be the best person to do this in the English-speaking world today.

He never strains to make the dots connect or come up with something novel. Novelty for the sake of novelty--making Jesus a bohemian hippie, Mediterranean cynic, or a skeptic--is not his intention. He has to deal with 200 years of searching for the history of Jesus, and people's intimacy with the primary sources; even, their desire to know his inmost thoughts. The job is certainly a very difficult one.
