I bought these to replace my old E2c's, which served me well. They were a great introduction to this fantastic line of headphones that will leave you amazed no matter which model you go with. If you've never heard any of shure's earphones before, you owe it to yourself to see what everyone is talking about.

Shure truly backs up its products. Every pair comes with a 2 year warranty that is top notch. On two separate occasions I sent my headphones in for a repair and ended up recieving a brand new pair with no hassel whatsoever. On both occasions the headphones were malfunctioning due solely to my own negligence in caring for them. I would wrap them tightly around my ipod or just toss them in a pocket or bookbag. The first issue I had involved the separation of the two halves of the casing surrounding the left earphone's speaker. There have been those few times in my life when I have been really blown away by something new in A/V. For example, the first time I heard Bose 901 reflecting speakers, the first time I tried Sennheiser open-air headphones, or the first time I watched a football game in high definition TV. These were moments where I heard or saw a significant jump in performance from what had come before. Listening to the Shure SE530 Sound Isolating Earphones is now another one of these moments.

I won't go into durability, comfort, value, etc. (all covered by other reviews and all perfectly adequate for me), all I will discuss is the SOUND.

Having owned a pair of Etymotic ER 6i series for a couple of years, I recently decided to upgrade to a pair of Shure E530. The fragile nature of the Etymotic cables kept me away from the ER-4P.

After listening to the E530's for the past several hours, I am blown away. While the ER 6i's were a quantum leap above the standard Ipod headphones, the E530 are likewise another huge leap over the ER6's. Granted, the cost factor has gone up by the same percentage. That said, as with the cost of any item, perceived value is the issue. In this case, based on my level of satisfaction, I believe that I have received good value for this purchase.

This was my response to a certain post on a certain forum. The original poster claimed that the Shure SE530s and ER4Ps might be in the same tier. The text below is my response to him:

I personally do not claim that the ER4Ps are in the same tier as the SE530s. About a year ago I went through a "I need good earphones" craze that ultimately landed me in Shure E500 PTH territory (the predecessor to the SE530). I wanted a set of really, really good earphones and that's exactly what I got. The ER4Ps had a very good stage and very VERY good highs (and upper mids) -- but the low end was severely lacking, especially compared to the E500s. The rest of the lineup I tried -- UE Super.fi3s, ETY ER6, Klipsch Custom-1 -- just didn't come close to the other two.

Oh, on an aesthetic note, the ER4Ps look like you have mini-dicks plugged into your ears, whereas the SE530s look like you have hearing aids in your ... Read More
