Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Insufficiently fleshed out publicity fare
This is indeed a great concept, and functioned excellently in its goal of bringing together many of the "big-name" superheroes of both universes. In this respect, this series was definitely successful in its goal.
However, as a story, it is plausible as far as comic stories go, but lacks anything truly memorable. Certainly, there was a tiny bit of depth, but the already flimsy story is all but scuttled by the meager way it is told. Indeed, the story suffers extremely from trying to cram too much into too little. The story has no set up (which can work, but doesn't in this situation; think Emperor Joker tpb; bewildering beginning, but ultimately a good enough story that I'll be returning to it again and again), jumps straight into trying to fly through every super hero it can without any development, nor a deep exploration of how characters would interact.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - DC versus Marvel versus Grasping at straws
The concept is fantastic. Let's have Marvel's best duke it out against DC's best. The artwork is outstanding as well. However, my biggest complaint is the same as many other readers; the battles are far too short. Plus, some of them end in some sense of confusion. It leaves the reader scratching their head thinking, "So how did he beat him?" or "You're kidding me. He won by doing that??" The Aquaman/Sub-Mariner battle is a perfect example of the latter. The storyline on how this happens gets a little out of control. I don't feel as if there was much thought put into how these two universes were brought together.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Biggest Smash-Up of the Century!
D.C. versus Marvel is like a mindless action film with explosions. You don't need too much depth for it to have great quality. This graphic novel is just amazing great fun. I was really shocked to see what the writers came up with and the big twist threw me backwards.....sideways! I don't want to spoil things for future readers, but you will be wanting to read the continuation.

I thought the series was just going to have one on one brawls with no plot throughout the whole story, but Marz, David, and Jurgens REALLY pushed their imagination to the limit. They are great writers and I was very very impressed. I hope Hollywood never tries to adapt this story to film because it really could never work. This is a story that will always stay famous to fans on ink and paper. Prepare for an amazing trip with this comic series. No one could have predicted the outcome.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Disapointing read
Disappointing overall. The almagam universe was the most interesting idea and was touched on too brief like everything else in this book. The amalgam series alone is far better than this effort and I would not waste time purchasing this book. Try the amalgam trades and also try JLA / Avengers - that book is far better and keeps all characters in 'character'.
