Product Description:
Pete Greig, the acclaimed author of Red Moon Rising, has written his most intensely personal and honest account yet in God on Mute, a book born out of his wife Samie s fight for her life and diagnosis of a debilitating brain tumor. Greig asks the timeless questions of what it means to suffer and to pray and to suffer through the silence because your prayers seem unanswered. This silence, Greig relates, is the hardest thing. The world collapses. Then all goes quiet. Words can t explain, don t fit, won t work. People avoid you and don t know what to say. So you turn to Him and you pray. You need Him more than ever before. But somehow...even God Himself seems on mute. In this heart-searching, honest and deeply profound book, Pete Greig looks at the hard side of prayer, how to respond when there seem to be no answers and how to cope with those who seek to interpret our experience for us. Here is a story of faith, hope and love beyond all understanding.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Christ's Unanswered Prayers?
I'm fifty-four years old. Don't make the mistake I did, saying to myself, "This kid (Peter Grieg) is in his mid to late twenties! How much can he know at his age?"

I'll tell you what Peter knew that I didn't think about: Jesus has unanswered prayer. "Let this cup pass..." and "that they might be one". Peter Greig also knows about life in difficult circumstances, passion for truth, and the wisdom and character wrought in suffering. He offers up his struggles and insights and hope in this watershed book.

God answers prayer - miraculously, through others, and sometimes by saying, "No" and "my grace is sufficient". Our sufferings are filled with purpose even when, at the time we cannot make sense of it. And in our seemingly unanswered prayers He is present.

One of my favorites stories is of Peter's attempt to teach one of his children to ride a bicycle. You'll have to read the book ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Changed my life!
After four years of infertility and two IVF cycles, my husband and I had just lost our third baby at 14 weeks gestation. I was angry and searching for answers as to why God didn't "hear" my cries and answer my prayers to become a parent. I was meandering through the book store when this book's cover stood out to me. At first I thought it was a book about how people aren't allowed to talk about God (in school, etc), but when I read the second line, "Engaging the Silence of Unanswered Prayer," it immediately spoke to me. I devoured the book...and liked it so much I bought another copy on Amazon and sent it to my father, who always struggled with why God didn't save his broken marriage to my mother or allow him to get a coveted promotion. Pete Greig does a stellar job of explaining where God is when we're hurting and crying out to him (He's right next to us, sometimes carrying us, and crying with us). Greig also empowers ... Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - really?
I must admit that I was surprised to find only positive reviews of this book. I found it to be cheesily written, trendy and totally unsatisfying. Grieg assumes all of his readers are somehow both completely devout and completely disbelieving simultaneously. Furthermore, in some parts he actually implies that unanswered prayer is due to sin, when the evidence in life and in the Bible suggest that the righteous suffer just as much, and sometimes more than non-believers. The conclusions he draws require enormous amounts of blind faith and trust. This book will probably not help the suffering unless they already have very strong belief in an all-good, all-powerful God.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - When God is Silent
Perhaps this book was meaningful to me because Pete's experiences, along with his wife, Samie's, have parallels to my own.

Plenty of people have theoretical answers to what happens when God is silent in the midst of life's inevitable crises, but such people are rarely helpful when the bottom actually falls out. I greatly appreciated the transparency and honesty of this volume. It was refreshing not to be smothered with the obligatory Christian pablum and spiritual platitudes about suffering.

Therefore, I am not embarrassed to recommend this book to friends when events do not go according to the script they would prefer, and God seems nowhere to be found in the midst of the pain and confusion.
