Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Stuffy and heavy-handed
This has to be the most self-important history of cinema I've ever read. A sample sentence: "To view a film as the product of an auteur means to read it or respond to it as an expressive organization that precedes and forecloses the historical fragmentations and subjective distortions that can take over the reception of even the most classically coded movie."

Give me a break. I recommend Allen's "Contemporary US Cinema" instead, for readability, better detail, and a lot less first-person commentary.
