Product Description:
Between the winter of 2001 and the summer of 2002, Enron and Adelphia Communications filed for bankruptcy, and Tyco International was accused of evading sales tax totaling $1 million. Recently, the CEO of WorldCom was convicted in a federal court of an $11 billion dollar accounting fraud. Was this an unfortunate saga in corporate history or were the leaders of these companies unusually corrupt?

The disconcerting answer to that question, say Bob Hoyk and Paul Hersey in The Ethical Executive, is 'No, these leaders are probably little different from us.' Like us, they live in a world where there are always multiple causes for our actions. Our behavior is the result of a complex weave of situational factors, history and personality. Even if we have good ethical values to begin with, given certain situational pressures, we can all become unethical.

In this book, Hoyk and Hersey describe 45 'unethical traps' into which any one of us can fall. These traps, they say, can erupt in any organization environment. Some of these traps distort our perception of right and wrong—so we actually believe our unethical behavior is right. Many of them are psychological in nature, and if we're not aware of them they are like illusions—webs of deception. In their analysis, these traps significantly contributed to the large-scale corporate disasters we witnessed in recent years.

The authors take account of these realities, and offer a 'real-world' method that will predict, preclude and, if necessary, 'get us out of' these traps. Given the increased scrutiny under which all executives and mangers operate today, this book is a 'must read' for anyone who is charged with achieving an organization's mission – whether that mission is increasing profit, serving the common good, or both.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Forty-Five Traps; Springboard for Self-Examination and Lively Discussion
Why do people who appear to "have it all" risk reputation, wealth, health, family, and ultimately their very freedom? How did a modern nation with a culture that produced a Beethoven, Brahms, a Schuman, Goethe, Thomas Mann and a Bertolt Brecht, allow the Holocaust to happen? We can analyse social conditions and causes, but what drove a nation, of individuals after all, independently and collectively to put aside all notions of humanity to follow a dissolute, evil leader? These are questions that Robert Hoyk and Paul Hersey's "The Ethical Executive" lead us to grapple with. The forty-five ethical traps the authors categorize act as a means for examining our own behaviour and decision-making process; a stimulus for a discussion of the very definition of ethics itself. Our mettle is, in the end, tested at the moment of decision, when we find ourselves caught in an ethical dilemma. The book provides an excellent basis ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - What a Disappointment!
I bought this book with great excitement thinking I would get some new insights into why well intentioned people get involved in or collude in unethical behavior. Alas, this book falls far short of my expectations.

The Ethical Executive does not ground any of its (many) assertions in any real theory. It does not even really define ethics or morality so the reader has to make many of his or her own assumptions. While the chapters are easy to read, the stories quoted are often dated, - ho hum Enron, Worldcom, Adelphia - and no really new insights are provided. The systemic issues of unethical behavior are not really addressed nor are their ideas of how to overcome the many obstacles the Authors describe.
I think the Authors rushed to get this text on the bookshelves in time for Christmas and or to capitalize on the current financial environment. What could have been a really good idea, i.e. the thoughtful ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Read It If You're an Executive ... Read It If You're Not
I found this book relevant and helpful even though I don't sit in the corner office. I particularly like the way the authors discuss each "trap" in a straightforward, easily digestible format. They spend just a couple of pages on each one, yet each of the traps provides so much food for thought. You'll find yourself thinking about the examples for days. This book would make a great gift because it's so readable, timely, and thought-provoking. Definitely a must-read for anyone who works in an organization, whether corporate, academic, or non-profit.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Everyone Can Benefit
While this book is aimed at business readers, everyone can benefit from the insights it offers about our moral and ethical choices. Rooted in psychological research, THE ETHICAL EXECUTIVE helps the reader understand how susceptible he or she may be to authority (even when wrong), to conforming to group expectations, to blaming others, to becoming confused by conflicting loyalties, and to over forty other traps to which the naive person can easily fall prey. I felt personally enlightened by this humane and thorough treatment of a subject that is of importance in everyone's daily life.
