Product Description:
ERSKINE POWELL OF SCOTLAND YARD INVESTIGATES MURDER ON THE MOORS.

On a remote, fog-enshrouded estate in the North York Moors, a murderer lays a cunning trap. The prey, it seems, is Dickie Dinsdale, the greedy landowner who bulldozes people's lives like so many old barns.

Easily a dozen residents of Blackamoor would derive pleasure from Dinsdale's slow, painful death. But, Detective-Chief Superintendent Erskine Powell asks himself, which of them is bold enough to do the deed?

Is it Dinsdale's old gamekeeper, dismissed without warning? The environmentalist he assaulted and humiliated? The sexy stepsister he spied upon? Suspects are as thick as grouse in summer, and bringing down a killer on the wing is very tricky--even for a pro like Erskine Powell. . . .

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Copper Cozy
I like this series with London's Detective-Chief Superintendent Erskine Powell. This one takes us to the north of England, where Powell has to decide if the death by snakebite of a much-hated landowner is murder. Too many suspects with motives, but how can the fog and a poisonous snake be murder weapons? This series and this book are good, readable British police-procedurals in the category that I think of as the English Copper Cozy. [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Read
Not Agatha Christie or Elizabeth George but a pleasant short read. Perfect for a long plane ride or a few days on the beach.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Lightweight but dreary
This is an English police procedural starring Erkine Powell, a Scotland Yard Chief Inspector whose marriage is nearly on the rocks, who hates a boss who returns the favor, who is attracted to a lovely sergeant, and who is awash in two dimensional suspects of the murder of an unlovely victim. There is very little action, too much review of what we have learned so far, no humor and other than perhaps liking his lager too much, an unflawed hero. This is sort of in the Deborah Crombie genre but not written as well or appealingly. If you are stuck for a book on an airplane, it will do, but that is about it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - More Malice!
Besides the malice of middle age and the malice of a meddlesome superior, [Chief] Supervisor Erskine Powell of Scotland Yard, is bullied into investigating a very odd murder on the moors in lieu of his long planned vacation. Despicable Dickie Dinsdale desperately deserved to die (sorry, kinda hard to resist), but was it truly the bite of a "bloody adder"? Supervisor Powell and Sergent Sarah Evans, find a village full of people with grudges, an environmental terrorist, a nympho half sister, cunning stepmother, and (seemingly?) incapacitated father, as well as a fired and a promoted gameskeeper, and the [Almost Always Evil] Big Business - all seeming to have motives. Another exceedingly cunning cozy with anthropology, geology and historical references thrown into the mix - as well as the usual number of red herrings. Plenty of cozy time around the fire in the pub, interaction with curious and occasionally charming ... Read More
