Product Description:
Joseph Lemasolai Lekuton gives American kids a firsthand look at growing up in Kenya as a member of a tribe of nomads whose livelihood centers on the raising and grazing of cattle. Readers share Lekuton's first encounter with a lion, the epitome of bravery in the warrior tradition. They follow his mischievous antics as a young Maasai cattle herder, coming-of-age initiation, boarding school escapades, soccer success, and journey to America for college. Lekuton's riveting text combines exotic details of nomadic life with the universal experience and emotions of a growing boy.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great book for any child
This is a wonderful book for children. My kids suprised me by pulling it off their bookshelf and asking me to read it to them. They are typical American children with no sense of what it must be like to grow up in a different culture. But they loved this book and so did I. It's simply written, so that children from 7-100 can understand it -- and even electronic-age kids can relate to the experience of growing up without a Nintendo DS or a Wii, or even a TV.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing person!
This is the story of an amazing man. I enjoyed it and have passed it along to a friend. His story is fascinating and full of hope for all of us.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent book to supplement HS Global Studies
- I was recommended this book by the 9th grade English teacher who felt it would supplement what we cover in Global Studies I (World History). The reading level of the book is very easy and appropriate for 9th graders (and probably 7th and 8th graders) without being "too simple". The style is sharp and it evokes powerful images.

-Content-wise, the story is great, it covers a wide range of cultural comparisons and differences with "just enough" explanation to enable students to relate to it. It is upbeat and yet tense throughout the author's struggles. It covers a great deal of material in a fairly short number of pages.

-I see this book as ideal for independent reading for students in 7th-9th grade English classes or as a supplemental book for World history students. As a teacher, I may use short segments to supplement classes on African culture. There is a short section in the rear of ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Facing The Lion: Growing Up Maasai on the African Savanna
Shipment was timely. Much more writing in the margins and underlining that I anticipated. Would not have purchased the book if I understood how much writing was in it.
