Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A must read...
If you feel yourself a potential writer, and needed to learn what you must not write.
Or if you are an acneic teenager, enjoying playing munchkin in RPG, and having trouble dating girls.
This book begin agonizing on page 7 on 246, and was frozen dead on page 30. From page 7 we learn the main character (he does not deserve to be call the hero, look in a dictionnary for the definition of a hero)is tall, strong and handsome. From there everybody could guess what will happen. He will defeat his ennemies one handed (one fingered, even) and seduce every women. On page 30 he meet the woman, who as foreseen (on page 7) fall in love with him on the spot. And then, for some 216 pages more, we got a puny attempt from the author (does he deserve this title, as the main character the one of hero ?) try to justify the falling in love of the woman and the so called redemption of the Main character.
From my point ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A new low in writing
Philip Athans is an apparent graduate of the sellsword school of writing. Using the word sellsword in an attempt to give some sense of flavor to what is, in my estimation, one of the most poorly written books I have ever had the misfotune to read.
The novel fails to grasp even the a hint of the richness of the story line inherent in the game from which it is drawn, and in doing so it further fails to add anything to the saga.
I now know to avoid anything written by Mr. Athans and given that he was, and possibly still is, managing editor at Wizards, I will possibly avoid anything he may have had a significant role in producing.
Do yourelf a favor, avoid this book at all costs.

i really like his style of writing.
i plan on buying more books by Philip Athans

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Not a good book to buy
I bought this book because I liked Philip Athans' writing style in other books, Lies of Light, Whisper of Waves, and Annihilation, and because I remember playing this game a long time ago (1999?). I was quite disappointed in this book, and I share previous reviewers' opinions who were also disappointed, such as the lack of character development and motivation for the characters to go from place to place. But what annoyed me was the portrayal of Jahiera. Jahiera is portrayed as some erratic, highly emotional, defenseless damsel in distress. My memory of the game is kinda fuzzy, but I remember Jahiera was DEFINITELY NOT like this. In nearly every fight scene she's screaming. Screaming for Khalid or Abdel to protect or rescue her. Screaming in terror. Screaming in fright. Screaming in horror. Screaming. Screaming. Screaming. And when she actually "fights", she just resorts to kneeing guys in the groin. If ... Read More
