Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Here is the first volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

A Game of Thrones

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.

Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Amazon.com Review:
Readers of epic fantasy series are: (1) patient--they are left in suspense between each volume, (2) persistent--they reread or at least review the previous book(s) when a new installment comes out, (3) strong--these 700-page doorstoppers are heavy, and (4) mentally agile--they follow a host of characters through a myriad of subplots. In A Game of Thrones, the first book of a projected six, George R.R. Martin rewards readers with a vividly real world, well-drawn characters, complex but coherent plotting, and beautifully constructed prose, which Locus called 'well above the norms of the genre.'

Martin's Seven Kingdoms resemble England during the Wars of the Roses, with the Stark and Lannister families standing in for the Yorks and Lancasters. The story of these two families and their struggle to control the Iron Throne dominates the foreground; in the background is a huge, ancient wall marking the northern border, beyond which barbarians, ice vampires, and direwolves menace the south as years-long winter advances. Abroad, a dragon princess lives among horse nomads and dreams of fiery reconquest.

There is much bloodshed, cruelty, and death, but A Game of Thrones is nevertheless compelling; it garnered a Nebula nomination and won the 1996 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel. So, on to A Clash of Kings! --Nona Vero

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant start of a great series
I won't waste too much time on this - the preponderance of highly favorable reviews say it all. Yes, the series is incomplete, so you might consider that when thinking about getting started. Yes, there's quite a bit of potentially 'unpleasant' material in this and the other books, so think about that as well.

All that aside, though, this book is a great start to what is already clearly a classic fantasy series - fantastic characterization and immersion in a realistic and intriguing world will do that. Shocks and surprises abound - HIGHLY recommended.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - PUBLIC WARNING! PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BUY!
All first time buyers of this book please read this before you dive into the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.

George RR Martin no longer enjoys writing these books (A guess, but a good one is you ask a lot of people), the chances are very high he will not finish this series before he moves on. So please be warned you might not finish the whole story. I also strongly advise not to start this series until he finishes the whole series, if he finishes it.

This series (A Song of Ice and Fire) is down right great! Everyone should read this. Best character build I have ever read, you will love the good guys, hate the bad guys, cheer victories, dam the book during defeats, cry, laugh, curse, read them twice if not more, and general think about only the books during the day. They will be classics, they will be discussed, and they have huge potential..........if GRRM can finish them.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The first book I've had to force myself to finish in ages
I was suprisingly dissapointed after being told how wonderful this series is. In the first 3 pages you get a glimpse of the horrors that threaten to engulf the world, 600 paes later it becomes woefully apparent that not a damn thing will actually happen in the entire course of the 800 page novel. You get the feeling that the series will focus on a wartorn nation being forced to face a new and terrible threat, but all this book does is set the stage, something even mediocre story tellers can do in far far less than 800 pages.

Beyond that, I found the characters to be very one dimensional, two to three words wholly describe mot of the characters, and very very few are actually people I found I could empathise with and care about. By page 400 or so I was tired of waiting for anything to happen, and by page 700 I was furious. When I finished the book and I was still waiting for the story to actually start, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great start to a great series
I give this book five stars!

I read this novel a few years ago and just finished the second book, a Clash of Kings recently. It took me a while to finish A Clash of Kings, compared to A Game of Thrones. I found this book to be original and I took to it very easily. When I started the second book, it started off harder to read as compared to A Game of Thrones, but I am glad I went on and finsihed A Clash of Kings, it was worth the time and effort.

I find myself supporting the Stark House in the series. At the end of A Game of Thrones I found myself liking and feeling sorry for Arya, so that helped me read through A Clash of Kings because I wanted to see what would be come of her. While doing that, I found myself liking Bran and Jon Snow. So now I just started reading A Storm of Swords, to find out what happens to these characters.

Tyrion is also another character I like in the series, ... Read More
