Product Description:

The move from New Jersey to Hilton Head, South Carolina, wasn't easy for the Russo family—difficult enough for Big Al and Connie, but even harder for their daughter Maria Graziella, who insists on being called Grace. At thirty-one and still, shockingly, unmarried, Grace has scandalized her staunchly traditional Italian family by moving in with her boyfriend Michael—who, though a truly great guy, is agnostic, commitment-phobic, a scientist, and (horror of horrors) Irish!

Grace adores her parents even though they drive her crazy—and she knows they'd love Michael if they got to know him, but Big Al won't let him into their house. And so the stage is set for a major showdown—which, along with a devastating, unexpected crisis and, perhaps, a miracle or two, just might change Grace's outlook on love, family, and her new life in the new South.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - From a Charlestonian's point of view:
I'm mulling this one over in my mind...an interesting mix of Charleston and Catholicism and not sure how I feel about it all. Give me a minute.

Okay, I've got it now. The reason I had such a hard time with writing an entry was because of the range of reactions I had to reading this. In one sense, I found it very much in the style of Dottie Frank, so it was like slipping into a comfortable pair of jeans. It's always interesting to me to see how she pops in local places and faces from Charleston. (Don't forget our license plates say "Smiling faces, beautiful places.) On the other hand, this time, I found things a bit too "pat"-- the ends tied up in too pretty of a bow, but that's probably the space I am in my life right now where my strings are all still unraveled and some are quite knotted.

The thing that saved this book for me was the reactions Grace had in the church in Italy and in Mexico, ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Full of Grace
I had read the book prior to this time. I ordered it for a friend. While the story is not a great classic, and even slow at times, I loved the message used to bring the story to a climax. I knew it was appropriate for my friend, who I know will love it also. It is an easy read. The "used" book was in excellent condition... Thank you.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A departure from Frank's other novels...
I am a big fan of Dorthea Benton Frank...as a GRIT (girl raised in the south!) myself, I love Southern fiction and especially those about the SC Lowcountry as most of Frank's books are set.

"Grace" however was quite a different read for me....I enjoyed most of the story but by the end, she lost me with too much religious coincidence and general hokiness. I did really enjoy the story of the Italian family transplated to Hilton Head Island (where I've vacationed quite a bit) and their interactions. Frank seemed to nail the Italian family pretty well, although some of the characters were a bit stereotypical, but some of her descriptions literally had me laughing out loud.

But the parallel plot of the main character's boyfriend's severe illness and how he is miraculously cured was just too hokey and unbelievable for me. It wrapped up a bit too easily and tidily and was just not realistic. I get ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Book
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I am so glad I read it. I found myself actually laughing outloud at the main character and her family. It's about a single Italian woman who meets the love of her life who just happens to be Irish and a non believer. According to her family, who are strict Catholics, it couldn't get much worse! You will fall in love with her and her family and witness a "miracle" at the conclusion. It's light, entertaining and a good read.
